Hungarian pianist Zoltán Kocsis was one of the finest pianists of his generation. He was a true representative of the Hungarian school and a great contemporary pianist (as well as a conductor and composer). His teaching serves to evoke the major figures of the great Hungarian piano tradition, from Franz Liszt, via Béla Bartók and Ernst von Dohnányi, to György Kurtag.

Sadly, Kocsis died in November 2016 at the age of 64, but, fortunately, he has left a legacy of wonderful recordings, as well as a plethora of recorded performances, interviews, as well as this master class, which I was delighted to recently discover.

In the first link, Kocsis works on W A Mozart’s Sonata in D major K. 284 with student David Kadouch, and, in the second link, on Johannes Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 in F sharp minor Op. 2, played by Ji Liu.

For much more information about how to practice piano repertoire, take a look at my piano course, Play it again: PIANO (published by Schott Music). Covering a huge array of styles and genres, the course features a large collection of progressive, graded piano repertoire from approximately Grade 1 to advanced diploma level, with copious practice tips for every piece. A convenient and beneficial course for students of any age, with or without a teacher, and it can also be used alongside piano examination syllabuses too.

You can find out more about my other piano publications and compositions here.
